Lesson One Merit Badge

I. Sit in place -deeply bend at your knees and ankles, * remain over your skates and reach down and touch your toes

2. Safety (how to fall without injury) -sit as low as you * can on your skates, lean to one side and fall onto a soft part of the body (bottom) -do not use arms, hands or elbows to soften fall -stay relaxed to reduce risk of injury

3. Safety (how to get up without injury) -from a sitting * position on the floor, roll to one side and get up on one knee, put weight on one skate then the other, keep your weight over the skates -do not place hands on the floor - use arms for balance

4. March in place -alternating legs, lift your skates off * of the floor while standing still

5. March walking -alternating legs, lift your skates off * of the floor while walking forward

6. March while rolling a short distance *

7. One-skate glide -from the "T" position, push off and * glide -alternate feet

Roller Basics Artistic Star I

1. "Shoot the Duck" -while rolling in the sitting * position, one leg is extended to the front

2. Cross front -while skating forward, your right skate * crosses over the left while skating counter-clockwise

3. From the "T" position, glide from one foot to the other * while rolling across the floor -alternate feet

4. Forward scissors across the floor *

5. Pushing from one foot to the other, cross the floor, bring * both feet together and bend at your knees and ankles

6. Backward scissors -use shoulder-width movements *

7. "Scooter Side Push" (inacircle)-slightkneebend- * counter-clockwise and clockwise

Lesson Two Merit Badge

I. "T" stop while rolling -both right and left *

2. March while using longer glides

3. Forward glide (" Airplane") -from the "T" position, * push off and glide on one foot while balancing the other behind you -alternate feet

4. Forward scissors *

5. Sit while moving -reach down and touch your toes * while rolling forward, bend at your knees and ankles

6. Curves -from the "T" position, roll forward on both * feet and lean or tilt your body to the right or left –use four pylons to mark edges

7. Hop -while standing still, jump -keep your feet * together

Roller Basics Artistic Star II

I. Forward stroking -pushing off from the' , T' , position, * roll on one foot, then on the other, in a continuous glide - bring trailing skate alongside the rolling skate before beginning next push -keep knees and ankles slightly bent

2, Two-foot hop ("Kangaroo Jump") while rolling *

3.  Forward crossovers -counter-clockwise and clockwise *

4.  "Slalom" -moving forward using two-foot sways *

5.  Cross behind -while standing still, the right skate * comes in behind the left, weight transfers to the right, the left foot is pushed forward and off the floor and brought alongside the right -alternate feet

6. Backward marching *

7. Using backward scissors for momentum, pushing off * and balancing from one foot to the other with the free skate balanced to the front

Lesson Three Merit Badge

I. Cross front -while standing still *

2. Push off into a long one-foot forward glide from the * 'T' , position -travel as far as you can -alternate feet

3. Backward march while rolling a short distance

4. Backward stop using toe stops *

5. Rolling push-off into one-foot forward glides -return * your feet together for the push onto the other foot

6. Balance exercise -one person doing the forward scissors * and the other the backward scissors -alternate direction

7. Backward scissors -use short movements while keeping * your feet close together

Roller Basics Artistic Star III

I. Using backward scissors for momentum, do a backward * two-foot roll

2. Backward stopping using a one-foot toe stop -body * braced, knees slightly bent

3. Forward outside edges -right and left *

4. Forward inside edges -right and left *

5. Cross rolls -on outside edge, cross in front while *skating forward -change lean with each step

6. Starting from the "T" position, roll into a two-foot * Mohawk turn in a counter-clockwise direction, turning forward to backward, and backward to forward

7. Backward one-foot roll- right and left, with free * foot balanced in the front
